Uganda: Aneno, Nwang Fail First Hurdle in Italy

Kampala — Agnes Aneno's hopes of winning a medal at the ongoing World Youth Championships were dashed yesterday. The 17-year-old runner had a nightmare in the 400m heats when she was disqualified for a false start. For a runner that boasts of a 56.1 Personal Best (PB) time, Aneno must have been disappointed to see the results after the race. It was American Eutsey Ebony, who cruised to victory in 54.97 seconds ahead of Hungarian Lorand Lilla (56.15).

Had Aneno left the blocks without a false start, she would have finished second going by her all competitors' PBs. Before Aneno was disqualified, another Ugandan youngster Christopher Nwang had failed to make it out the 100m heats. The St Lawrence Secondary School student clocked a new PB of 11.19 seconds, finishing fourth in the heat. "It's unfortunate I didn't travel with him.

I think he failed to handle the pressure. But it's good he ran a new personal best," Hussein Sserwanga, the St Lawrence athletics coach, noted yesterday. The two runners, though, still have a chance of redeeming themselves when they compete in the 200m today. Haadi Nsamba, another St Lawrence student, made a good account of himself by reaching the 400m semifinals.

Edward Mateo (PAN) 10.90

Toros Pilikoglu (TURK) 10.99
