Iganga — Iganga District authorities are spitting fire over the circumstances under which the road reserve at the former Walugogo roundabout was sold to a private individual. The controversial land came about when contractors on the Jinja-Iganga Bugiri highway phased out the roundabout, leaving idle chunks of land at both sides of the road. It is this land causing confusion.
Construction is already in progress on the land, but the LC5 boss, Mr Asuman Kyafu, told journalists on Monday that he had terminated all activities on the plots, saying it was given out by the wrong authority.
Earlier on, the Iganga District Land Board Secretary, Mr Nathan Mununuzi, had placed adverts in newspapers calling for buyers. But Mr Kyafu said the transactions were null and void: Mr Kyafu said: "I want to warn Iganga Town Council to stop the idea of selling that land immediately. All public land belongs to Iganga District."
He said the district council would rather convert the spaces into roadside parking or market, where residents can generate some income and the district can get revenue. However, the Iganga mayor, Hajj Siragi Katono, insists that issues related to the development and give-away of public land are the responsibility of the District Land Board.
