Abeokuta — Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of THISDAY Group, Mr. Nduka Obai-gbena, yesterday donated 100 computers to Day Waterman College located at Asu village, off Abeokuta-Shagamu Expressway, Ogun State.
The donation was part of the activities marking his 50th birthday billed for Tuesday, next week, in Lagos. Making the donation on behalf of Obaigbena, the Deputy Managing Director of THISDAY Newspapers, Mr. Kayode Komolafe, said the gesture was part of the season of giving by Obaigbena.
According to Komolafe, over 1000 computers had been donated to Nigerian universities, adding that Waterman College was the only secondary school that had so far benefitted from the gesture.
He said THISDAY Group would continue to be at the forefront in the promotion of quality education across the country. While receiving the computers on behalf of the school's Governing Council, the Principal of the College, Mrs. Jeni Sayer, commended the THISDAY chairman for his philanthropic gesture and urged others to emulate him.
In his address, Chairman and Proprietor of the College, Mr. Tayo Aderinokun, said education should be available to all, regardless of financial status.
He said the college had designed a scheme to give opportunities to indigent students in having quality education, without recourse to the burden of fees.
According to Aderinokun, "We have an indigent scholarship fund; 30 per cent of our admission is reserved for such students. Our philanthropists have provided the funds to make the scheme a reality."
Earlier before he left for an urgent engagement, Obaigbena, who was conducted round the facilities at the College with other dignitaries including Hon. Nduka Irabor commended Aderi-nokun for the giant stride he was making in the education sector.
The THISDAY chairman promised to always render his assistance to the College, when the need arose, adding that what he had seen at the College was worthy of emulation by all and sundry.
Also, awards were given to deserving students, all the teaching and non-teaching staff of the College. Present at the award ceremony were the representatives of Olowu of Owu; Ogun State Commissioner for Information, Kayode Samuel; Director-General, Land, Gbenga Ogunnoiki; Chief Onaolapo Soleye; Mallam Mouftah Baba-Ahmed; Pastor Charles Abraham; and Prince Sam Obaide, among others.
