The Kabelano Charity Cup will be back next year, the organisers have said. The one-day soccer spectacular could not take place this year because there was no suitable venue after the National Stadium was closed for renovation, the chairperson of Kabelano Charity Trust Terrence Dambe said on Tuesday. He was speaking at the donation of P180, 000 to five charity organisations in Gaborone. The trust has donated P1,903,000 since its inception in 1995.
The Kabelano Orange Cup soccer spectacular has grown into a popular one-day event contested by four crowd pullers in the Premier League.
Dambe said they are still re-negotiating with Orange to finance the event again after its sponsorship elapsed last year. He explained that since the organisation has grown, they have decided to improve their service delivery. He said Kabelano recently took a decision to improve its delivery systems by outsourcing the administrative functions to a local consulting firm.
Meanwhile, Dambe urged young people to volunteer their services to assist the under-privileged.
He said the country is faced with a lot of social ills and it has become apparent that government cannot deal with the problems alone. "No country, no matter how rich it is can take care of all its people without the help of its citizens," he said. Dambe added that it is befitting this year to donate to flood victims as the idea of forming the trust arose as a result of flooding that took place in Palapye in 1995. He thanked volunteers for making a change in other people's lives. Organisations that benefited from Kabelano's cause are the Holy Cross Hospice, Kasane-based Bo Nkgonne project, Mahalapye Primary School, Women Against Rape in Maun and Botswana Red Cross Society. The bulk of the funds were generated from the Orange Kabelano Charity Cup.
