Cameroon: South West - Hectic Homecoming for Vice Speaker Lifaka

The Vice-Speaker of the National Assembly and daughter of the soil, Emilia Monjowa Lifaka, was on June 27, 2009 given a hilarious welcome in Buea, during a ceremony organized by Traditional Rulers of Buea Sub-Division. Honourable Lifaka, who hails from the Bonjongo Court Area in Buea, was being honoured for her election, last March, as Vice-Speaker of Parliament.

On receiving her, the President of the Buea Sub-Divisional Conference of Traditional Rulers, Chief Linonge France Kinge, fluted Honourable Lifaka's political climb since 2002 when she was elected Member of Parliament from the Buea rural constituency. She immediately became the Finance plus Budget Committee Member. In August 2008 she rose to Deputy Leader of the CPDM female Parliamentary Group Co-ordinator. These positions kept her busy. She proved her worth, leading to her present position as Vice-Speaker in the House.

On how Hon. Lifaka has used her political clout to help the Buea constituency, Chief Kinge pointed to the Bonjongo Government High School, which she built, equipped and offered to the population. Equally, Hon. Lifaka has generated assistance for the human capita and has planned to successively sponsor 125 Buea girls in vocational training beginning with 25 of them currently undergoing training. Upon graduation, Hon. Lifaka promised, these girls from all the villages of Buea will be given installation grants to enable their economic activities take off.

The Traditional Rulers' representative sued for concerted efforts to enhance development in all Regions in the country. He urged Parliament to correct the political and economic injustices suffered by various minority groups in the country. Emitting as a waiting volcano, the Buea Chiefs called on the powers that be to ensure that institutions of Cameroon protect and enhance their integrity, independence and clear division of responsibilities assigned them by the constitution of the land.

The Buea Chiefs added to their requests a bouquet of thanks to the Head of State, President Paul Biya, for the Mutengene-Kumba rehabilitated road, numerous schools built and equipped, Community Development and Health Centres.

The Buea Chiefs equally sent a clarion call to the Head of State through their daughter and Vice- Speaker for the up grading of the status of Traditional Rulers in Cameroon as well as providing reasonable stipends to enable them effectively carry out their important roles.

Speaking on behalf of the Buea elite, Mola Ekema Monono, GCE Board Director, urged the guest of honour, Hon. Lifaka, to use her high office in his words: "To do Buea one favour, that of stopping the feud, rumour and backstabbing of one another for political ends".

In her response to the various concerns Honourable Lifaka invited job-seeking youths to organize themselves into groups of joint venture and make use of PIASSI, a programme of the Ministry of Youth Affairs. "Youth are our source of strength", she harped. She paid glowing tribute to the Traditional Rulers promising to be Buea's hunting dog as they requested. Hon. Lifaka said she was bearer of a message of stead fast unity from the Head of State. "I bring with me a basket full of hope for the Fako people," she said.
