South Africa: Mmametsi - Culture Vs Desire

Celeste Kriel

10 July 2009

Many young people grapple with the tension between traditional beliefs and changing modern culture.

Mmametsi, a production by the University of Kwazulu-Natal, focuses on the struggle to marry personal desires with cultural expectation.

The main character is a woman whose ultimate desire is to become a medical doctor, but she has to make an important decision when she gets a calling to become a sangoma.

Director Gali Malebo feels that decisions which give rise to questions of identity, are an ongoing issue and everyone will be able to relate to the character’s apprehension, confusion and search for clarity.
