Port Harcourt — Hopes of a possible cessation of hostilities by militants in the Niger Delta were high on Thursday as some recalcitrant militants in the region have signalled that they would be willing to work with the newly appointed Honourary Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Timi Alaibe.

This is coming just as Alaibe himself has vowed to work in ensuring total peace in the region as long as all stakeholders would pray for and support him in realising the goal.

Jomo Gbomo, spokesman of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), in a late night statement on Thursday welcome the appointment of Alaibe.

He said with Alaibe, they could reach the President with ease and that a channel for the peaceful resolution of the crisis in the region may have been opened.

Gbomo also said MEND was in support of Henry Okah's desire to accept the amnesty offered by government and looked forward to his quick release.

The statement reads in part: "The recent appointment of Mr. Timi Alaibe as the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs by the Nigerian government is a humble and welcome development that is in line with the two-pronged approach of our current campaign code-named 'Hurricane Moses'".
