Harare — PREPARATIONS for this year's National Youth Games have reached the decisive phase with all the provinces having virtually completed the process of selecting their teams.

Sport and Recreation Commission manager in charge of community sport development Martin Dururu said preparations were moving smoothly. "Preparations are moving smoothly with our local organising committee having already convened the official start of the fund-raising exercise.

"Provinces are about to complete the team selection process and we had an induction workshop on July 3 attended by officials from each province to launch the "Edutainment Programme".

"The programme, which will be implemented in every province, is the fusion of activities to deliver education and entertainment as the youth games are a forum to educate athletes about life more than just playing the games," Dururu said. He revealed that the provinces were already in the process of paying the affiliation fees and registering the athletes who are going to take part in the games.

"Provinces are in the process of paying their affiliation fee to the organising committee and accreditation process has already started with provinces sending details of their teams to the committee," said Dururu. He said different stakeholders have come on board to assist with the preparations.

"The SRC is working flat out on resource mobilisation and various government departments are coming on board to assist. "Many key requirements are in place with most of the food required having been sourced and accommodation facilities have been secured.

"The Ministry of Health is supporting the games on the medical side while the Ministry of Transport have expressed their willingness to provide transport for the teams and TelOne is already installing cables for the hotlines to be used during the games," said Dururu.
