Angola: G8 Summit Participation Owed to History - Official

9 July 2009

Luanda — The presence of Angolan head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, at the ongoing G8 Summit of L'Atila, Rome (Italy), is the result of the country's history that engaged all its children.

This was said to Angop by the deputy minister of Culturer, Cornélio Caley.

The official also spoke of the need for an analysis of this fact from the historical point of view, taking into account all those that fell before and after the proclamation of the national independence, in the formation of the angolanity and reinforcement of the winning spirit.

He stated that the idea of social integration as a whole and one nation, leads Angola into being present at the G8 Summit, which is only possible due to the leadership of the country.

According to the official, Angola will take all possible advantages as, he added, the name of the country becomes more and more known for attending the G8 Summit, which is already a gain to the local diplomacy.

"With the participation of Angola in the G8, international investors will realise that something positive is being done, which constitutes a great gain", he stressed.

However, the deputy minister warned that these gains will only be great on the assumption that this is another starting point for other actions.

The G-8 groups the main powers of the world like the US, Japan, Germany, Canada, France, Italy, UK and Russia.

The group was earlier on named G7, a designation that changed with the admission of Russia in 1997.
