WHEN the Premier Soccer League resumes this week after a two-week break, the main attraction will be the clash between second-placed Gunners and former champions Highlanders at Gwanzura tomorrow.
Gunners, a small but ambitious club from Harare, trail leaders Dynamos by just four points.
The days of the Big Three domination seems to be over in local football. That streak was ended by Mononotapa's success last season when they confounded all expectations to seal the championship.
Gunners, who made the biggest acquisition during the mid-season break by signing Highway midfield ace Willard Katsande, will not be feeling inferior when the season resumes.
Gunners are coached by Zimbabwean football great Moses Chunga, who has not won a league championship in his coaching career and could see 2009 as his watershed season in terms of winning something of substance.
On the other hand, Highlanders have failed to bag maximum points in their last five outings, a rare episode for a club once a dominant force in Zimbabwe at the turn of the millenia.
Meanwhile, defending champions Monomotapa travel to the Eastern Highlands to face PSL debutants Highway in Mutare.
It has been an indifferent PSL so far for Monoz, who need a good result at Sakubva to boost morale ahead of the maiden appearance in the mini-league phase of the African Champions League. They host Etoile du Sahel in Harare next weekend.
That Monoz are on a high in Africa when they are operating in fits and starts in Zimbabwe is perhaps a statement in favour of the standards of Zimbabwean domestic football, which has been a subject of debate.
Monoz beat Highway 1-0 in the reverse fixture in Harare.
