Gambia: Youth and Sport Permanent Secretary Advises

Mambayick Njie permanent secretary for youth and sports indicated that sports has many benefits, not only the monitoring gains but also keeps one healthy.

Mr. Njie made this remarks on Saturday at Ndungu Kebbeh where he attended the first ever road race organized by the village to raise funds for the basic cycle school as well as encouraging long distance race at the grass root level.

PS Njie pointed out that sports nowadays has brighter future as sports men and women are getting higher pay for their services.

"Sports are the highest paid job in the whole world now, he said and one individual can earn up to £80,000/200,000 pounds. Just imagine", he said.

He urged the athletes to be serious in what they are doing. "If you want to take up something as a career, you must like it, devote your time to it and be committed to it, then you will rip the benefits tomorrow.

Turning to the organizers youth and sport PS suggested that in order for them to organize the road race annually, they should start next year's preparation now so as to have successful event.

"Every member of your committee must be dedicated to his/her duties to roll the wagon, he said." He also opined that the move is noble and should not only stop at the youth, but event the older ages.

"We at the department of state for youth and sports believed that many sicknesses that have been happening in our communities are as a result of lack of physical inactivity.

Base on this we are coming up with plans to organize. "Walk race for older women" to exercise their bodies".

Mr. Njie said that the world health organization has indicated that the best cure for sicknesses is physical activities adding that but the notions with people are that anyone who takes part in physical exercise has no work to do. "Sports will earn one not only money but good health as well." He said.

He advised the students to respect their parents and teachers. "Someone who is importing knowledge in you to become responsible somebody tomorrow, no one can pay that individual. You must give the teachers their dues. After your home, the first parents you have are your teachers. And back at home your parents. So give them respect they deserved, he advised.
