Liberia: Chiefs Meet President Sirleaf

10 July 2009

press release

Monrovia — More than 4-hundred chiefs from the 15 political sub-divisions of Liberia have assured President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of their continued support in her drive to develop the country. The chiefs, in a statement, recounted the many development programs undertaken by Government over the short period since the Liberian leader assumed the Presidency, describing the progress as a manifestation of her ability to move the country forward.

The Chiefs named the County Development Fund, the rehabilitation of roads, free primary education, and rehabilitation of healthcare facilities throughout the country as well as the acquisition of a national headquarters for the chiefs, as true demonstration of the President's desire to develop the country.

The chiefs also lauded the Liberian leader for their inclusion in this year's national budget. "Your decision to advocate for the inclusion of chiefs in the national budget is like being released from prison," the chiefs noted in their statement, presented by Paramount Chief Brown Cooper of Bong County.

They referred to the President's decision to select a traditional leader as this year's Independence Day Orator as another testimony of the President's love and respect for the traditional leaders of the country. The selection of a traditional chief as national orator for the country's independence is the first by Government in recent memory.

"You have made the indigenous people proud; you have made them part of you; we can see you anytime, it was never easy for us to see our leaders in the past like we can see you today. For that we say thank you; we are behind you," the elders declared in the statement.

The chiefs are in Monrovia to participate in a preparatory meeting, ahead of the formal opening next week of a national headquarters. They expressed gratitude to the Liberian leader for helping, through elections, to establish a chain of command within the leadership of the traditional council of chiefs, making it easier to communicate on matters of common interest for the country. They assured the President of their continued support as she works to attract more development to all parts of the country.

Responding, the Liberian leader thanked the Chiefs for the visit, commending them for the support given to Government. The President said the development of the country remains primary and will continue to work to ensure that more progress is achieved. "The only thank-you I can give is to work to create more jobs, to fix the roads, to build more schools and to make sure you live in peace," President Johnson Sirleaf told a jammed pack auditorium of chiefs. She encouraged the chiefs to continue to work for the advancement of the country by engaging in agricultural production.

There is more that needs to be done, she added, acknowledging that it sometimes takes a little longer. The Liberian President, however, said the results of visits abroad are paying off, and encouraged Liberians to continue to hold together for the progress the country has begun to witness.

The meeting, held at the Foreign Ministry's C.Cecil Dennis auditorium, was witnessed by the Chairman of the National traditional Council of Liberia, Chief Zazan Karwor, Internal Affairs Minister, Mr. Ambulai Johnson, the Minister of State, Dr. Edward McClain, among others.

They will do so, as traditionally they are able to do all kind of bad things " against their own people for the sake of safe community".( or some petty gain...).So they believe!..for exchange of... glass beads, etc...as in the past when… [Read Full Text]

Are those so-called chiefs speaking for themselves or for the people they say they represent? I will tell them they are lying if they say they are speaking for their people.
