One would wonder why the Accra File has this headline, because, while awaiting the first African-American President of the United States of America (USA), Barrack Hussein Obama's arrival on Friday to visit our cherished country, one should quickly assess or survey thoroughly how the city of Accra looks like to receive this august visitor.
The Accra File's survey of some parts of Accra has revealed that most of the city would not be a pleasant sight for the U.S President.
The recent downpours have exposed the poor drainage system in the city of Accra. The flood-prone areas are seriously flooded, with houses submerged, due to the poor drainage systems, rising ground-water levels, coupled with the nasty attitude of the people in indiscriminately dumping refuse anywhere, especially in the drains.
Sanitation continues to be a problem in Ghana, as the drains continue to serve as dumping grounds for some undisciplined citizens, who continue to dump solid waste into drains and blocking them in the process.
Just after the recent downpour, this file visited some places and noted that most of the rubbish on overflowing waste containers had been carried away by the rains onto the streets. This has made most streets dirty and an eyesore.
Although President Obama would not visit every part of Accra, the city has to be kept clean to save the health of its residents, and some of these places include Kaneshie behind the main market.
The entire area has been turned a rubbish dump where nearby residents and market women dump their rubbish.
The rubbish has been dumped onto the street making the whole place stink with an accompanying plague of mosquitoes, to the detriment of those who live nearby.
Some residents told the Accra File that initially waste collection containers were placed there, but even when they became full, without being taken away, traders and residents continued dumping rubbish on it.
A survey also revealed that the situation was same in other parts of Accra, with the abandoned containers.
Some places where these places include part of the Kaneshie Mallam station, and the Kokompe-Darkuman Junction, just before the traffic lights, where rubbish containers are full to overflowing, while rubbish is now thrown on the ground and is spreading onto the streets.
The Accra file is therefore urging the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and Zoomlion Company Limited to intervene to avoid disgrace and embarrassment during Obama's visit.
