Ghana: 'Zoom Captains' Off to China for Further Training

10 July 2009

Twenty four out of the 25 'Zoom Captains' who passed out of a special training by Zoomlion Ghana Limited left Accra on July 2, 2009 for a two months further training in the operation of heavy duty equipment in China.

The 'Captains' will be trained by manufacturers of equipment used by Zoomlion for its operations.

In a pre-departure briefing, the General Manager of Zoomlion, Mrs. Florence Larbi urged the captains to take their training seriously and return in a better shape than they left.

"I will advise you to be good ambassadors of Zoomlion as well as the country at large and not indulge in activities that will bring the image of the company and our dear nation into disrepute."

Family members of the captains who were at the briefing also paid glowing tribute to the company for the training and support given to the captains who entered the company as sweepers and progressed to become tricycle riders and are now operators of heavy duty equipment.

The Zoom Captains Concept was launched on July 16, 2008 after 25 women from various regions in the country passed out after a six months intensive training in the operation of heavy duty equipment.

The objective of the Zoom Captains initiative was to give women the opportunity to earn higher salaries, break the myth surrounding male dominance in the heavy duty equipment sector; bring gender equity in the allocation of jobs as well as help build women role models for younger women to learn from.

Mrs. Larbi disclosed that Zoomlion hopes to train more women in earth moving equipment operation in the near future.
