Luanda — About eight million weapons of various calibres are fabricated annually around the world, ANGOP learnt Thursday from a member of the National Disarmament Commission of Citizens in Illegal Possession of Weapons, commissioner Paulo de Almeida.
The commissioner made this announcement while presenting a report on the situation in terms of disarmament of population in
Angola, as part of a meeting on "Reflection on Angola's Christian Leadership", taking place since Tuesday in Luanda.
According to the National Police second commander, since 2005, 200,000 weapons in possession of demobilised soldiers were collected, as part of the Bicesse, Lusaka and Luena peace accords processes.
Paulo de Almeida stated that 55,750 weapons of different calibres, 200,000 ammunitions, 36,000 bullets magazines and over 15,000 explosive devices were also collected.
According to the commander, "the church should collaborate in the demilitarisation of citizens' minds, since it has the power of reaching thousands of people in seconds".
In four days, officials from churches are discussing spiritual and social impact at the current phase of the country, the contribution of the church in elaborating the future Constitutional Law, as well as the participation of women in key sectors of the country.
The event ends this Friday.
