Namibia: Big Names for Bowling Tourney

10 July 2009

Windhoek — The Windhoek Country Club Trips lawn bowling tournament is set to bring in big names from the local and South African bowling scene from 16 to 18 July.

With players nearing their peak for the season and the Namibian Open just around the corner, fans can expect stiff competition on the green at the Windhoek Country Club Bowling grounds.

Local big names that locals can expect to feast their eyes on are the likes of Elaine Krahenbuhl, Tollie Cronje, Bea Lamprecht and Graham Snyman.

There will be a matter of national pride at stake in this tournament because there will players from South Africa who will seek to fly the Rainbow Nation's flag high. The Namibians will have the pressure and the advantage of playing on home soil. And with expectant fans they will be out to impress.

There will be a total of 60 players on the field, some with very big reputations to live up to, including Commonwealth medal winners and national team members.

The format of play will be mixed alternating trips, which will give each of the men and women in the teams five ends a game at skipping their team. Each game will be made up of 15 ends and teams will be allocated points per game through a scoring system and matched against their next opponents on a strength-versus-strength basis.

The draw for the first round of play will take place at the Windhoek Country Club Bowls on Wednesday, a day before the tournament kicks off.

Prize money up for grabs will be over N$50 000. This tournament will be a warm-up to the Namibian Open Championships to take place later this year.
