Ghana: Govt Still Committed to Bridging North-South Education Gap

Tamale — The Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Stephen Sumani Nayina, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to bridging the yawning educational gap between the North and the Southern parts of Ghana.

According to the Minister, promotion of quality education was the only and surest tool to ensure accelerated development of the people, and therefore challenged all stakeholders to complement the efforts of the government.

Mr. Nayina made this remarks over the weekend at the 18th Graduation Ceremony of the Amison Secretarial School in Tamale.

The Minister observed that since education formed the pivot in the success story of any nation and its people, there was the need to raise the fallen standards of education in the region, for national development.

He entreated the students in the north, and more particularly the Amison Secretarial School, mainly for girls, to take their books seriously, to enable them chalk successes in their final studies.

The Regional Minister also admonished the school authorities not to be only profit-oriented, but try to obtain accreditation in order to start HND programmes.

The Principal of the school, Mr. Issah Abdul- Mumin, also disclosed that in their bid to contribute to the development of the Northern Region, the school, since 2004, had trained selected officers from all the security services and district assemblies in computer literacy.

He said even though the school's training programmes were directed towards only the three northern regions, they now had trainees from the ten regions and other neighbouring countries, including Nigeria and Burkina Faso.

He attributed the success of the school to excellent tuition, and praised the Ghana Education Service for up-grading the school to a Diploma status.

He however called on government to assist the school with modern computers and furniture suitable for the training of the students.
