The government is expected to pay close to Shs20 billion in rental arrears to the Kingdom of Buganda, money that has accrued from the central government's long stay at Kigo Prison, which is located on the kingdom's land.
An evaluation report about the prison's 328.6 acre property written by Dinge Professional Services, and seen by Saturday Monitor reveals that Shs18.7b in rent has accrued in arrears for a period of 16 years.
"The government owes us (Mengo) a lot of money, not from Kigo Prison alone. All outstanding debts should be cleared unconditionally," Hajj Nsubuga Nsambu, the Buganda kingdom deputy Katikkiro, said in a Thursday interview.
President Museveni recently gave a Shs2 billion donation to Buganda Kingdom alongside other traditional kingdoms for agricultural development within their kingdoms and also to facilitate Buganda's anti-poverty efforts within the kingdom's subjects.
"Instead of painting a false picture that they are helping us (Buganda), they should clear our debts," he said.
But Ministry of Internal Affairs Permanent secretary Steven Kagoda said they hadn't received the Shs2.2b needed to purchase land for a new prison on Entebbe Road.
