Uganda: Otuke Gets District Status

10 July 2009

Kampala — The parliamentary committee on Public service and Local Government has endorsed the creation of Otuke District.

It will be severed from Lira district. The decision was based on evidence availed by the area member of parliament Daniel Omara Atubo defending the demand for a separate district.

Otuke has not been fairly treated as a county under various development programs such as NUSAF and NAADS, Atubo argues. The area can only develop if it's granted a district status, he adds.

The area is very far from Lira District headquarters. This has been denying the residents an opportunity to have easy access to public services, according to Atubo.

He was meeting the committee chaired by Kalungu West MP Anthony Iga. The committee is currently reviewing a proposal by government calling for the creation of 14 new Districts.
