Nigeria: Kaduna - Metamorphosis of Overloaded 11-Point Agenda

opinion

Abuja — Ahead of his administration's two-year anniversary, Governor Namadi Sambo of Kaduna State went on a state tour ostensibly to commission projects executed and/or completed by his administration amidst public outcry that he is yet to fulfil any of his campaign promises. At the inception of his administration, Sambo formulated and predicated his administration's policy direction on an 11-point agenda. However, Namadi's inaccessibility and continuous absence have created a political vacuum and are making the state vulnerable due to weak governance.

The administration's policy on transportation, healthcare and water supply is as comical as it is cosmetic. These areas have become mere reference points in the government's policy pronouncements. Acute water shortage has remained a disturbing bug and the people of Zaria and its environs in particular have to wait for another three years for the completion of the "Zazzau Zam-zam water works" in order to have access to potable drinking water (assuming the project will be completed in three years).

It smacks of non-performance to make a public show of the commissioning of not so important projects long executed by local government councils in the absence of a single important state project that is due for commissioning in the whole of two years. The administration of Namadi Sambo needs to be reminded that multibillion naira projects such as KADA Games, New Government House and Millennium City are not the primary purpose of government. The people of Kaduna State cannot sacrifice their basic needs on the altar of executive jamboree and imperial shenanigans.

Consequently, if there is anything that calls for celebration as part of the administration's two-year anniversary, it is the collective verdict of the people that their governor is not making any headway in achieving the much touted 11-point agenda.
