Zambia: Sondashi Counsels Opposition Parties

11 July 2009

FOUNDATION for Democratic Alternatives (FDA) president, Ludwig Sondashi has said opposition parties should not join forces for the sake of removing the ruling MMD out of power.

Dr Sondashi said on the Radio Phoenix programme 'Let the people talk' monitored in Lusaka yesterday that it would be pointless for the people of Zambia to get rid of the MMD but remain with the same challenges. He said unless they had a better person in mind that had attainable policies, Zambians risked voting for a party that could be worse than the MMD.

He said Zambians should not repeat what happened in 1991 when everybody ganged up against the UNIP government of former president, Kenneth Kaunda even when those in the MMD did not share the same aspirations.

"Everyone is talking about removing the MMD from power when they should be talking about what they want to see in a leader as well as the policies that they would like to be implemented," he said.

He advised Zambians to avoid being emotional on political matters but to use their intellect to come up with the right people who could drive the nation forward. Dr Sondashi said he was the only candidate who had what Zambians needed, and it was imperative for the people to give him a chance to show what he had to offer.

Asked if he had intentions of joining the Patriotic Front and United Party for National Development pact, Dr Sondashi said he could only join them if they approached him formally and only if their ideologies matched that of his party.

Dr Sondashi, who was criticised by most of the people who called in for forming a political party instead of joining one of the existing ones, said he had the right to form his own party and he was going to see to it that he became president in 2011.

He said he would concentrate on working with the youth because they were the ones who had suffered most from what he called the MMD policies. He said the youth had better ideas of leadership, adding that time had come for experienced people like himself and some fresh minds to take over government.

Dr Sondashi announced the formation of his political party recently in Kitwe.
