Zambia: Luanshya Mine Owners Disappoint MUZ

11 July 2009

THE Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has expressed disappointment with the decision taken by the new owners of Luanshya Copper Mines (LCM) to offer six-month contracts to re-engaged former employees.

MUZ general secretary, Oswell Munyenyembe said the move taken by the NFCA management to offer six months contracts to employees was contrary to what was earlier agreed upon.

Mr Munyenyembe said in a statement issued in Kitwe yesterday that the move to offer six months contracts did not give comfort and assurance to employees and other stakeholders who expected NFCA management to be bold enough to take long-lasting decisions.

"We recall vividly assurances which were made that former LCM employees will be taken on, on long-term pensionable contracts of employment.

"We and all the concerned stakeholders know with certainty that the life span of Baluba and Mulyashi, once developed, will be in excess of 20 years," Mr Munyenyembe said.

He called on NFCA management to reconsider its decision by taking a long-term vision of awarding employees decent pensionable contracts of service.

Mr Munyenyembe also called on the Government through the ministers of Mines and his Labour counterpart to intervene.
