Kenya: Win Hardly Enough

12 July 2009

editorial

Nairobi — Kenya on Sunday qualified for next year's World Women's Volleyball Championships in Japan by winning the continental qualifiers in Nairobi.

While it's a laudable achievement, there are numerous questions to ponder over as the gallant African queens prepare for their fourth appearance at the global tournament.

Granted, the girls' performance continues to draw admirers countrywide and from around the continent. But to date, the team is yet to record a win at the world stage. This is worrying.

It is not enough to keep making appearances at the world stage just to be whipped. The Kenya Volleyball Federation needs to shift its objectives from merely qualifying, to making an impact at the World Championships next year.

That Kenya is yet to go past the preliminary stages of the global event should prompt the federation to invest more in the technical aspects of the game, including exposing more players to the global game as full professionals.

While we celebrate yet another continental title, those charged with developing the game must start focusing on building a winning team that will make an impact at the 2012 London Olympics.

We need to move a rung above merely being Africa champions.
