Kampala — SIX defeats and 67 days later, KIU returned to winning ways with a 61-40 MTN-FUBA men's top division victory over the KCC Lions at Wandegeya yesterday.
Like their season-opening win over the Knight Riders, this was a match expected to end in KIU's favour - as in fact had been the majority of their fixtures before the start of the season.
But despite having repeatedly come up short, Nimrod Kaboha's troops were not going to lose again. Certainly not against a KCC side that was in worse health going into the contest. Although both had a single win, KIU are arguably the better team and had been competitive in all their previous matches, excepting the loss to the Falcons.
Nevertheless, only three points separated the teams by the end of the first quarter, which KIU won 12-9. That lead grew by six points at halftime with KIU 26-17 ahead. The Lions made a meal of it in the third quarter as they moved to within three points going into the final period. But that is as close to victory as they ultimately came, a scenario which ensured Baker Mande's team will end the first round last on the table with 10 points.
Jeje Chaka was KCC'S top-scorer with 14 points with Elli Gesa netting seven. KIU's Brian Wati sunk a game-high 17 with teammate Markmot Orom managing 16 to lead the University outfit to victory.
