Kampala — UGANDA Super League side Express is on the verge of signing ex-international Hassan Mubiru for duty in the forthcoming season! The news of the former Police, Express and SC Villa player returning to Wankulukuku came shortly after talk that KCC were also eyeing another veteran Phillip Obwiny.
You've certainly not forgotten that KCC also have Willy Kyambadde in their ranks.
These players were at their prime a decade ago and are by all standards now well past their sell-by date. They are therefore the last players that serious teams should be going after.
This is where SC Villa has beaten fellow giants. They have gone in for the youth. The current Villa sides comprises of players groomed as a unit from U-16 level.
If Express and KCC have any plans for serious league campaigns next season, then they should copy the Villa approach.
The great KCC sides of the seventies and mid nineties sparkled because of a solid youth foundation that had continous flow of talent into the senior team.
David Otti used a similar approach at Wankulukuku in the early nineties. Obwiny, Kefa Kisala and Fred Tamale are some of the talents that were fine-tuned by Otti. The team indeed delivered with local honours before narrowly missing out on CECAFA Club Championship glory in 1994.
But if Roger Milla could light up the 1990 World Cup at 38, Mubiru and Obwiny may be the men for Express and KCC. But it sounds more like wishful thinking.
