Kampala — THE domestic basketball governing body FUBA has asked Kampala International University (KIU) to replace UCU Lady Canons at Zone 5 club championships due in Kampala, July 27-August 2.
The request follows UCU's withdrawal from the tournament.
UCU explained in a communication to FUBA that they cannot raise a competitive team because of international rules forbidding more than two foreign players to compete for a club.
FUBA secretary Tom Ocamringa confirmed UCU's withdrawal last week.
The official said then that a replacement would be found this week.
Canons have five Kenya n players Hadija Shaban, Brenda Mbone, Lorraine Akinyi, Salome Oketch and Asiya Syria.
The other clubs representing Uganda are A1 Challenge and KCC Leopards in the ladies category, while Falcons, Dmark Power and Warriors will feature in the men's event.
Another FUBA official Sunday Manano said that KIU is the ideal club to take over from UCU.
"We considered KIU because they were fourth last year in the league and we had to make a late call."
KIU sports tutor Patrick Ogwel welcomed the move saying, "two days ago, I got a telephone call from FUBA president that KIU steps in and we are ready to do so."
"It's a good opportunity for us as an international institution and as champions of the East African universities championship.
