Kampala — THE joint Uganda-Kenya team charged with remarking the common borders started erecting boundary pillars on Wednesday.
The first pillar was erected at Sumba Island, one of the many islands that lie on the border.
"When they started work, they realised that the control points had been damaged, so they have been repairing them," said the spokesman on the disputed Migingo Island, Fred Opolot.
The control points at the Uganda-Kenya border were installed during the colonial times. Pillars are established basing on control points.
Opolot said due to the delay to repair the control points, the joint team led by Uganda's director of land management, Justin Bwogi, and Kenya's director of surveys, Ephantus Murage, would complete work by July 31.
A joint meeting between President Yoweri Museveni and his counterpart Mwai Kibaki had set the deadline for June 30. The exercise will establish the boundaries of the two countries.
