Kampala — THE Nabagereka, Sylvia Nagginda, has asked the Government to extend more relief to famine victims in Teso.

Officiating at the function on which the Christian Children's Fund renamed its NGO ChildFund International, Nagginda also called upon the Government to find a permanent solution to such catastrophes.

The Uganda Red Cross has announced on Friday that over two million people in the north, east and West-Nile were at risk of starvation following the long dry spell.

The regions have also never recovered from the flooding, which affected the cycle of storing seeds.

Nagginda urged the Government to invest in the care and education of its children, saying this would boost the fight against poverty and strengthen families.

She added that there was need for collective action towards the welfare of the vulnerable because of the growing population and poverty.

"Although the needs of children have been receiving attention lately, the plight of thousands of them is still appaling," she said.

Nagginda said children faced early marriages, had little or no education and sexually transmitted Infections, especially HIV/AIDS.

"Caring for our children is a shared responsibility involving parents, the community and the Government," she said.

Nagginda thanked ChildFund International for addressing the problems that face children.

ChildFund International is an NGO that caters for vulnerable children.

Davidson Jonah, the NGO's acting national director said the organisation supports over 33,000 families through 49 affiliate community-based organisations.

Jonah said in the 30 years of the NGO's service in Uganda, they had supported over 1.25m children and families.
