Nigeria: Generator Fumes Kill Three in Lagos

Lagos — Tears of sorrow flowed freely from the eyes of the inhabitants of Ibiye Morogbo village, a suburb of Badagry area of Lagos when the news of the death of a couple and their mother-in-law who were suffocated by fumes from a generating set got to them.

However, two of their children are presently being treated in an undisclosed hospital in the area, while the remains of the deceased had since been deposited at the General Hospital in Badagry.

Though, details of the incident was still sketchy as at the time this report was filed, Police report had it that the bodies of the deceased persons and their unconscious daughters were recovered late yesterday by a combined team of police and some neighbours.

It was stated that the victims were in their sleeping position when the door leading to their one-bedroom was broken to make way for rescue operations.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Frank Mba, while confirming the report said that police at the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) are presently investigating the matter.

Mba, who told THISDAY on phone that an autopsy would be conducted on the remains of the victims, stated that the police at Morogbo were informed of the incident by some anxious and concerned persons. "They reported that a particular household at Checkpoint, Tollgate village, Ibiye Morogbo went to bed last night and were yet to wake up" he added.

According to Mba, upon receipt of the information, a team of policemen led by the Divisional Police Officer who rushed to the scene forced the door open.

He stated that they met five persons in their sleeping position and that on a closer examination it was discovered that three of the victims, the father, Moshood Odewale, mother and mother-in-law were dead while the two children of the couple, aged 18 and 23 (both female) were still alive, but unconscious.
