Somalia: AMISOM Forces Deny for Taking Part Shelling And Fighting in Mogadishu

12 July 2009

Mogadishu — The African Union peacekeepers (AMISOM) have denied a statement saying they were taking part the shelling and fighting in the north of the Somali capital Mogadishu, officials told Shabelle radio on Sunday.

Major Brighye Bohuko, the spokesman of AMISOM in Mogadishu said in an interview with Shabelle radio that they did not take part the fighting adding that the people saying that statements were planning tactics to attack the AU forces' bases in the capital pointing out that the AMISOM forces have a redline .

"No, no we are not taking part in that fighting. I think those who are making that statement are creating plans to attack our positions. As you are aware, the first commander of AMISOM troops made a statement about two weeks ago saying that there was a red line adding that their forces will start to take action if the redline is crossed," Brigye Bahoku said.

Asked about what and where the redline was, the spokesman replied that he will not mention it anymore saying that the journalist was the one who was needed to understand it reiterating that it could be the finest point of their base in the capital.

The statement of the African Union forces' spokesman major Brighye Bahuko comes as more of the residents in the north of the capital confirmed that more of AMISOM forces took part the fighting and shelling in the capital.
