Luanda — People all over the globe commemorated on Saturday (July 11) the World Population Day, which was established by the Council of Governors of the United Nations Development Programmes, in 1989.
The data was inspired due tot he public's interest, in 1987, year in which the world population reached five billion inhabitants.
Over 140 countries worldwide commemorate this date, which stresses the importance of family planning for the wellbeing of families, communities and nations and also the need for greater inclusion of these services in national development plans.
In a message on the occasion of the date, the secretary general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon, affirmed that in the midst of the worst global economic crisis in generations, we
must find the most effective ways to continue progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
He added that there is no better path than the focus of this year's World Population Day:
Investing in Women and Girls.
The current world population is of 6.5 billion inhabitants and might reach nine billion by 2050, according to a report of the UN.
