Abuja — ESOMA, a herbal research institute in Abuja at the weekend said it has drugs to cure sickle cell anaemia and to boost the immune systems of people living with HIV.
This was disclosed by one of the institute's board of trustees, Pastor Solomon Balosibina at a press briefing to mark the research centre's 10th anniversary on Saturday at Gwarinpa, Abuja.
Pastor Balosibina said that ESOMA researches into herbs that can be useful for ailments that have either defiled treatment or yet to get solutions.
He said the World Health Organisation (WHO) is presenting sponsoring the phase II clinical trials on the institute's drug called 'Esomaron' that acts as a general immune booster.
"The presence of Andrographolide in Esomaron is capable of eliminating virus such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, hepatitis, etc, from the human system.
Andrographolide is also confirmed to penetrate the blood brain barrier," he further disclosed.
Balosibina distributed documents on an investigators brochure complied by a team headed by Prof. C.O.N Wambebe, former director of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical and Research Development were it was stated that a pilot clinical trail was undertaken using Esomaron in 2001 at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.
"It was an open prospective study involving 10 people (five males and five females) living with HIV/AIDS.
The duration of the clinical trial was six months and it was observed that opportunistic infections associated with HIV/AIDS were resolved after using the product for three months and the quality of live of all the trial subjects improved significantly, while five trial subjects that were confirmed cases before the therapy apparently had low levels of HIV after treatment that were below detectable range," the document read.
The team suggested that the drug be used as a supplement in the management of people living with HIV/AIDS, adding that it is based on the profound immuno-stimulatory activity and anti-viral effect af Andrographis Paniculata.
According to Balosibina, 'Solamin's test results have also been encouraging for sickle cell anaemia.
"Results from phase I clinical trials conducted by the University of Lagos confirmed that the drug has up to 97.95 percent sickling prevention and up to 84.00 percent sickling reversal.
The fragile nature of the patient is completely eliminated and physically development is greatly enhanced as over 80 percent of patients that used the drug for two months recorded genotype 'AA'," he stated.
Balosibina, who said they have held meetings with some officials of the US embassy and received well wishes from NACA, lamented that they are some officials of government frustrating the achievements recorded from the herbal drug that serves as an immune booster to HIV/AIDS.
