Kampala — Uganda has set up four regional export information points (REIPs) to deepen market information dissemination networks within the country.

An official statement released last week said as part of efforts to implement the national export strategy (NES), Uganda Export Promotion board had partnered with the private sector to set up the points. The four strategic private sector partner institutions, the statement elaborated, were selected on the basis of their current client base and their business service delivery capacities. They are: Acholi Private Sector Development Centre for the Northern Region, to be launched in Gulu on July 16; Ankole Private Sector Promotion Centre for the Western Region in Bushenyi launched last week on July 9; Eastern Private Sector Development Centre for the Eastern Region in Mbale on July 14; and West Nile Private Sector Promotion Development Centre for the West Nile Region in Arua to be launched on July 21.

The partnership shall last two years and is envisaged to expand beyond the initial regions after that.

A memorandum of understanding between Uganda Export Promotion Board (UEPB) and the four regional information centres was signed on April 27, 2009.

The memorandum says UEPB is supporting the institutions with the necessary capacities like infrastructure, training and market information materials in form of market briefs and forecasts, price information, quality and standards information, promotional events (including local, regional and international trade fairs), market and business opportunities, customs and documentation, packaging and labeling, export finance support and incentives.

On their part, the focal points are providing office accommodation, personnel for effective running of the points and generation of information such as supply capacities of exportable products within their regions.

The information centres are intended to bridge the gaps enumerated by the National Export Strategy and to stimulate wider national consciousness on export issues, through the provision of accurate and timely export market information and attendant advisory services, added the release.
