Zambia: Kitwe Judge Wants Prison Built in Chililabombwe

14 July 2009

KITWE High Court judge-in-charge has said Government should contemplate building a prison in Chililabombwe to decongest the Chingola prison that was currently catering for 414 inmates instead of 150.

Judge Rhoda Kaoma said building a prison in Chililabombwe was the solution to decongesting Chingola prison. Ms Justice Kaoma was speaking yesterday during the opening of the criminal sessions at Kitwe High Court.

She said the current situation of over-crowding inmates might result in disease out-breaks and that the Government must find a long term plan to resolve the problem of congestion at the prison. She said it was sad for a prison that was supposed to cater for 150 inmates to be housing 414 inmates.

She cautioned prison authorities not only to be working when judges visited them, but always do what was right and report to authorities what they needed to report. "The situation at Chingola prison is bad and the only solution is for the Government to build a prison in Chililabombwe so that Chingola would only keep Chingola prisoners and not what was happening now, where Chingola prison was keeping prisoners for two districts," Ms Justice Kaoma said.

And Kamfinsa Prison officer-in-charge Patrick Nawa said Copperbelt prisons had enough food and that the situation in all the prisons was fine.

Mr Nawa said he was happy that most old cases that were pending for cause listing had been listed.
