Ghana: Obama's Visit & Botched Protocol At KIA

editorial

President Barack Hussein Obama's visit to Ghana on Friday night and departure the following day has really placed this country in its rightful place among the comity of nations. During the short period that the President of the most powerful nation in the world was in this country, the world attention was focused on Ghana.

Surely, this is going to create business opportunities for this country, provided our leaders would make the necessary follow-ups. Our democratic credential has already been sold to the outside world and this should make it easier for the country to attract investors.

"No country is going to create wealth if its leaders exploit the economy to enrich themselves, or can be bought off by drug traffickers. No business wants to invest in a place where the government skims 20% of the top - that is not democracy, that is tyranny", Obama noted during his address to parliament.

As a result of the numerous anti corruption institutions that have been put in place, The Chronicle does not think Ghana can fall foul to any of these issues mentioned by the visiting President, therefore, nothing should discourage outside investors from coming to invest in Ghana.

Whilst praising all those who make it possible for this visit to become a successful one, The Chronicle also wishes to express its abhorrence to the unhonourable behaviour exhibited by some of the Ministers who went to the airport on Friday night, as part of the welcome party of Mr. Obama and his entourage.

Though the red carpet was meant for the visiting and host Presidents, some of the Ministers virtually fell over themselves just to take shots of the man who was being introduced to them, thereby chaotically criss-crossing the red carpet meant for the two Presidents. At a certain point in time, some of the Ministers had to be shoved aside by the US security team. Clearly, this was a disgraceful spectacle that must never occur again.

The way President Mills was left stranded on the tarmac after Obama had driven off was also part of the botched protocol that should never again happen. We wish to advice state protocol that next time an American President is to visit this nation, they need to sit down with the US embassy to plan on equal terms how things should be handled, instead of allowing the Americans to run rough shod over us.

Clearly we are not happy about the way Obama's convoy drove out of the airport after arrival formalities, leaving President Mills standing alone, and not knowing what to do.

At least, some little respect should have been shown to President Mills by Obama's security, by the way they drove their President away from the tarmac. All said and done, despite the small hitches of the botched protocol, The Chronicle still holds the view that Mr. Obama's visit is a timely one, which is going to tremendously benefit the country in the long run.
