Nigeria: National Assembly Makes Case For Disaster Prevention

Abuja — The National Assembly is working on a legislation that will make provision for fire safety in buildings and industries among others a priority, the House of Representatives sub Committee Chairman on Fire Matters, Rep Innocent Chime has said.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the management of Media Trust Limited yesterday, Rep Chime describes fire accidents like death that comes without notice and regretted that little attention has been given to the subject by the authorities.

He said Nigeria Fire Service has been moved around from one ministry to the other; without serious impact in the last decades even though incidences of fire outbreak are common occurrences in the country.

The law maker said, "Even in legislation, it has been going from one ministry to the other. At a particular time, it was in the Police, another time it was in ministry of works and Housing and today it is in Interior. Yet, people cry every day in our major cities and markets. It is high time, real action is taken." The coordinator of Fire Disaster Prevention and Safety Awareness Association of Nigeria, Badanga Ahmed Lamidi who accompanied the lawmaker said their conference will soon address some of the issues. He tasked the Nigerian media in the dissemination of the message of fire safety, as "everyone is a stakeholder."

The team was received by the Managing Director of Media Trust Ltd, Alhaji Ishaq Ajibola and General Manager (Business and Strategy), Aliu Akoshile.
