Namibia: Hilton Group Eyeing Namundjebo Plaza Hotel?

17 July 2009

Windhoek — One of the world's leading hotel group, the Hilton Group, has shown interest in becoming a partner in the Eliakim Namundjebo Plaza Hotel, which is currently under construction in Windhoek, a source said.

Protea Hotel Group of South Africa, which had earlier been named a partner in the project, had pulled out of the management deal for the hotel, said the source, who is close to the United Africa Group, the developers of the hotel.

However, Brian Rubinstein, CEO of the United Africa Group denied that the Protea Group had pulled out of the deal.

He told the Economist that the Protea Group was one of the many companies the United Africa Group was negotiating with over a partnership deal for the hotel.

"We are considering other operators as well," Rubinstein said.

He said contractors were currently working on the fourth floor level of the hotel, which is scheduled for completion by April 2010.

The hotel is situated in the centre of Windhoek, opposite the Supreme Court. The project is valued at N$2 billion.

The Plaza will comprise the five-star hotel, entertainment facilities, office and parking components. It is set to attract both local and international clients.

The 80 000 sq precinct project is being developed by South Africa's Madison Property Fund Managers together with Swiss Properties.
