I think this show of force is connected to the two French Officers taken hostage but force is the least effective venue to rescue the hostages. The Helicopters hovering over Mogadishu were covering a militery transport plane that brought in French officers collecting on ground data - including laising with the TFG if they can supply any usefull information.
The only the french can try militery means is if the officers had some sort of chip inplanted in to their body which can send signals to a control room or a satellit. The Al - Shabab are extreamly secretive and elusive so chance of penetrating their rank is very shaky at best or impossible at worst.
