Kamwenge — Kamwenge and Kyenjojo district local governments are to lease over 200 acres of Katonga Game Reserve to a private local investor for development of a tourist resort, Daily Monitor has learnt.
The move to give away the game reserve is being spearheaded by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the district administrations of Kyenjojo and Kamwenge which share the reserve.
Information available to Daily Monitor indicates that M/s Game Tries Uganda Ltd owned by former Kabale Municipality mayor Kaaka Matama was awarded the rights to carry out a number of development activities including sport hunting among other tourism services.
UWA Public Relations Officer Lillian Nsubuga confirmed that the body was trying to develop eco-tourism in the reserve.
Speaking to Daily Monitor on Monday, Ms Nsubuga said: "Most game reserves have been with low tourism so we want them well managed through public participation."
