Makurdi — The Benue State government has decided to adopt the model used by Imo State in the greening of its state capital, Owerri, saying it will replace major road dividers currently wearing slabs or concrete with grass and flowers.
Commissioner in charge of Water Resources and Environment, John Ngbede, who disclosed this plan in an interview with Daily Trust, yesterday, said Governor Gabriel Suswam's plan to make Makurdi the cleanest state capital will be complemented by the greening of road dividers within the city.
He said work on the proposed project will commence in few days time, stating that it entails digging out the laterite and other solid particles and replacing them with manure to nurture the green grass to be provided.
"We are digging the laterite out to at least three metres to enable the plants have firm roots in the ground", said the commissioner.
John Ngbede also said the green grass will be complemented with trees which will also be provided along the major roads within the city.
He named the roads as Kashim Ibrahim Way and Atiku Abubakar Way which link Government House with other sections of the town, Iyorchia Ayu Way , J.S. Tarka Road , Old Otukpo Road and Radio Benue Road . He also said the part of Makurdi-Gboko road and Makurdi-Naka-Ankpa road will be provided with the plants, at least around the metropolis.
