Nigeria: Jigawa Communities Get 508 Hand Pumps

Dutse — In order to improve hygiene and reduce water borne diseases in rural communities in the state, the Jigawa State Government is building hundreds of hand pumps to replace open wells in all rural communities; providing, in the first year of the project, 508 such pumps.

The ultimate aim of the project is to discard the use of open wells completely, thereby reducing hazards posed by open wells while at the same time meeting the government's set target of providing potable water to all communities by the year 2010.
