Football revival in Kumba is now in vogue with the organisation of a 45-day tournament.
«Kumba City Council inter-quarter football competition - to revive football in Kumba» This is the message on banners at main entrances into Kumba and junctions within the municipality. The football revival is necessary, for when Meme Works (PWD Kumba) clashed out of Division One in 1995; Kumba City has been in football oblivion. The club is virtually inexistent for lack of sponsors in the likes of Fayez Olabi, Hon Nkelle, Tendo Richard, Hon Abel Mukete, Njomo Kevin and many others. Being more than just a football fan but lover of the game; the Government Delegate to the Kumba City Council, Victor Nkelle Ngoh decided to organize a forty - five day football tournament in the city. The competition, which started on June 5, is still in the first round. The aim of the competition is to detect budding talents and to curb juvenile delinquency during the long holidays.
Apart from the competition, the Kumba City Council has employed 50 youths (40 boys and 10 girls). After identification of the young talents, football lovers in the city would sit on the table to revive Meme Works, the uniting force with diverging views of Kumba municipality. Out of the many quarters in the municipality, sixteen teams representing five zones covering the entire city were formed. The zones are Malende Kossala , Alaska , Mabanda, Njuki Njembe, Barombi kang and Kake II. The competition costing Kumba City Council CFA one million is organized in collaboration with the Divisional delegations of Sports and Physical Education, Youth Affairs and Meme FECAFOOT. Meme Works that slumped to Division Two some fourteen years ago rose to Division One in the early seventies.
