Reporting to the Director of the UN Millennium Campaign as part of the leadership group of the global campaign, we are looking for a Deputy Director to head the Campaign in Africa.   The Deputy Director will lead and manage the work of the Africa team and make a significant contribution to the UN's global MDG Breakthrough Strategy as we start the countdown to 2015.

The position has overall responsibility for catalyzing citizen action to enhance the accountability of national and local Governments to the poor, in relation to MDG achievement in Africa.  The Deputy Director will be a visible champion for the MDGs, representing the Campaign in major fora within the African continent.  Responsibilities include formulating and executing regional and national strategies and plans, and initiating and nurturing strategic partnerships with key partners and constituencies.

We are looking for an inspiring and widely recognized anti-poverty advocate with at least 15 years of proven track record in fighting for greater government accountability and social, economic and political justice in Africa.  Applicants will have a deep knowledge of African development and political economy and have extensive experience with the major partner constituencies, including the media, national Governments and Parliamentarians.  A Master's degree from a reputed institution in a related field, excellent English writing and speaking skills, experience of working in an international context, ability to lead teams in a multi-cultural setting, and delivering quality results within tight deadlines is essential.  Knowledge of African languages and French and of the UN and civil society in Africa is desirable.

The position will be based in Nairobi but involves extensive travel.  The expected duration of this senior-level appointment is for 3 years.  The deadline for applications is 16 August 2009.
