Ghana: A 72-Year-Old Man Escapes Mob Attack

AN ANGRY mob at Lungu, a predominant farming community in Bongo district last Friday at about 7:00 pm nearly lynched a seventy-two-year-old man, alleged to be spiritually witch-hunting someone in the community.

Narrating the incident to The Chronicle in an interview, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), George Tetteh Zuta, Bongo District Police Commander disclosed that the issue was reported to his office by Naba Salifu Alemyaarum, the Paramount chief of Bongo Traditional Area.

The District Police Commander said Akurugu Atanga, the victim, had been taken to Zorko-Kanga, a suburb of Bongo for a 'trial by Ordeal' at a fetish house. After undergoing the ordeal, Atanga developed bruises all over his body.

The police have arrested six suspects, including the fetish priest whose name was given as Naaba Abaasi, and they are currently helping the police in their investigations. According to ASP Zuta, a similar incident of mob action occurred barely two months ago at Kunkua, another suburb of Bongo.

He expressed worry over the incident and called on the people to always assist the police early enough, with the necessary information for action to be taken. He commended the Community Police Unit of the National Youth Employment Programme for their support to the police in the area.
