Nigeria: Hasten Action On the Siren Bill

editorial

The House of Representatives, penultimate week passed a bill, which when it becomes law, will limit the use of use to certain categories of public officers, and ban its use by unauthorized persons.

A large number of officials and personalities who currently use the siren will be affected by the ban. Those affected include the First Lady, governors' wives, ministers and military service chiefs. The bill, if consented to by the Senate, also restricts the use of siren by the police, fire service department, ambulances and paramilitary agencies in emergency situations. The bill gives concession to a few public officers to use siren. Speakers of the state House of Assembly are allowed to use the siren only in their states. On the other hand, chairmen of state councils of traditional rulers are also privileged under the bill to use siren while on transit to other states.
