After he surrendered his title to the other opponents in the last five years, the Senegalese Grand Master International (GMI) Macodou Njie, the 2004 champion, has bounced back and won the 13th edition of the African Draughts Confederation Championship and Draught World Cup qualifiers which concluded at the Paradise Suite Hotel on Wednesday 22nd July.
In the last day of the championship, the Senegalese 5 times African Champion defeated Alpha Youla of Guinea Conakry to collect 11 points ahead of Jeane Marc Ndjofang of Cameroon, who also has 11 points but lost a game.
Ndiaga Samba of Senegal, Moussa Camara of Guinea Conakry, Kubougueu Kouomou Leopold of Cameroon and Sheikh Njie of the Gambia all completed the Draught Championship with 10 points.
The surprise package of the 13th edition of the African Draughts Confederation Championship and Draughts World Cup qualities was Gambia's Sheikh Njie whose first major international appearance in an international tournament, earned him a place in the World Cup in Sao Paulo-Brazil in September this year.
Sheikh Njie opened his first encounter with a draw against the 2008 champion Kbuogueu Konomou Leopold of Cameroon and completed the 8th round with another draw against Jean Marc Ndjofang who is also a grand master. He banked 10 points, lost only one game, drew four and won three.
The youngest player of the championship was Sadibou Drammeh of Mali who was unbeaten in the championship. He gained 9 points which placed him amongst the best nine players who are to represent Africa in the World Cup in Brazil in September this year. The results of the championship are as follows;
