Nigeria: Aliero Gets Six-Week Deadline On Mpape Waste Site

The Senate has Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero, has been directed to ensure speedy completion of the work at the Mpape Waste Disposal site in the Abuja.

The directive followed a meeting of the Senate's Environment and Ecology Committee, the FCTA, Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), and Ecological Fund office at the National Assembly on the abandoned project. Chairman of the Committee, Senator Grace Folashade Bent (PDP, Adamawa South), gave the order saying, "This committee has resolved that the FCTA should make sure that the Mpape waste disposal site is completed and ready for commissioning in six weeks time. You should make sure that the waste system is functional by the first week of September." On the Goza dump site, the Committee also gave the FCT Minister and his Environment counterpart, John Odey, two weeks ultimatum to come up with a strategy on how to solve the problem in the site and develop it. "The site needs to be secured and fenced in the first place because the situation is so devastating" said Senator Bent.
