Kampala — A Euros 40,000 (about sh100m) health centre has opened in Lwanunda village in Buwunga sub-county, Masaka district.

Launching the Moloney Medical Foundation recently, information and communication technology state minister Alintuma Nsambu urged the residents to contribute towards the maintenance of the facility.

"This medical centre will save the people of Lwanunda the hustle of travelling to the distant health centres in Masaka and Nyendo towns. I urge the local leaders to ensure that it does not run out of drugs," he said.

Nsambu commended the Irish Aid and the Irish-based Children's Education Fund for financing the centre.

He thanked Uganda's honourary consul to Ireland Sylvia Katete Gavigan for brokering the partnership that led to its construction.

Gavigan noted that euros 500,000 (about sh1.3b) was needed to complete the construction.

The centre also houses a vocational school and a women's microfinance institute.
