Uganda: Underweight Cement Seized in Jinja

Kampala — THE Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has impounded 181 bags of under weight cement in Jinja.

The cement, which included building cement and tile cement, was valued at sh5.2m and was confiscated from various shops in Jinja town during a two-day monitoring exercise.

UNBS' surveillance officer John Mawa and David Kayhul, the head of the market surveillance section, said the seized cement had an average of 5kgs less.

"According to the Weights and Measures Act, cement is supposed to weigh a maximum of 50kgs. But it was between 45.8km-48.3kg.

It was also found to be adulterated and we have picked samples, which we shall take for analysis to identify the composition of the products which are questionable," Mawa said, adding that one suspect had been arrested.
