The Benue State Policed Command has arrested two suspects in connection to the recent assassination of the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress TUC, Benue State chapter.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of Benue State, Alh Ibrahim Mohammed stated in Makurdi at the weekend, that Police investigations revealed that the Labour leader was allegedly murdered by a three-man gang led by one Tavershima Inongu.
He said the Police had been on the trail of the gang and only recently the bandits attempted to escape out of Makurdi but the Police swooped on them at their hideout.
The Commissioner also added that two members of the gang namely, Iorhen Iorbee and Solomon Adure were arrested while the gang leader Tavershima Inongu escaped in the process.
Mohammed stressed that while the Police is still on the trail of the escaped suspect his men recovered two locally made pistols, fourteen rounds of live ammunition, one expended ammunition and four assorted mobile phones from the suspects.
The commissioner who also paraded other suspects arrested for involvement in criminal activities in the state informed that his office was in possession of a joint communiqué issued by the NLC and TUC in the state intimating the police of their intention to "embark on a mass protest for what they termed the lack of security in the state".
He warned that the Police would not guarantee the safety of anyone found to be involved in the planned protest advising that the unions shelve the idea in view of its security implications.
According to him, the Police would not rest on its oars to ensure the protection of lives and property of the people of the state adding that the people could only aid the police by providing useful information to security agencies to enable them perform better other than indicting the police for non performance which according to him kills the morale of men and officers.
